Wari Game

Wari is the chess of Africa. It belongs to manqala family, whose members have been played for millenia in different variants by the people living in Africa and the near east. The variant usually called "wari", "ourri", "warri", "awari", "awele", or similars--the one that I will explain here--is played in guinean gulf and the caribbean, where it was taken by black slaves.

Material

Material is extremely simple:

Goal

The goal of the game is to capture the majority of seeds. Since forty-eight of them are on the board when game begins, twenty five captured mean victory.

Rules

Wari rules are as simple as it could be:

Board

The board is made up of two rows of six hollows each. The row near us is "ours", and the one farther from us is our rival's one. A general principle is that one always comences in one of our hollows, and the captures, if they exists, are always done in one (or serveral) of our rival's hollows.

Game begins with every of these twelve hollows containing four seeds.

In addition to these, usually there are two extra hollows, one at each end of the board. They are called "houses". The one at our right hand is our house, the other the house of the rival. Their function is to contain the seeds each player captures during the game.

A movement consists of the following:

Capture, if it exists, is the last part of the movement:

El máximo número de piedras que podremos comer en un movimiento es pues de dieciocho (tres en cada uno de los seis hoyos del rival).

The maximun number of seeds that can be captured in one movement is eighteen (three in each of opponent's six hollows).

Two suplementary rules concern the case of one of the players having no seeds in any of his hollows. This could happen in two ways:
